Action Plan
1) What are the specific areas of weakness you remember identifying in your fitness appraisals that you wanted to address with your exercise program?
I stated in my fitness appraisal that I wanted to work on my body composition (start building muscle, reduce fat, and maintain a consistent workout routine that I actually follow every week). Along with this, I also want to work on having a healthy diet that benefits my goals, and not fall easily to the temptations of eating unhealthy food. With my exercise program, I want to focus more exclusively on weight training. I understand that weight training is a crucial way to build muscle over time, working on my upper body and building a more positive mental attitude towards working out.
2) What are your goals for this fitness program? (to have fun, lose weight, socialize, look better, get stronger, improve athletic performance, etc.)
I obviously want to get stronger and improve my athletic performance. These are at the top of my priorities list. I understand that I am not capable of performing with my actual soccer team because of my fitness level, my cardio doesn't allow me to play the entire game and my strength allows players to tackle me easily off the ball. This is still my main motivations for wanting to workout, but I also want to just have fun and enjoy the process of working out. I have seen some of my other friends lose weight because they started going to the gym, and they seem to be enjoying the process and appear to be in a better place mentally, so I'm hoping I can achieve similar things to them.
3) List specific examples of what motivates you to participate in and stick to your regular exercise program?
For when I am playing soccer, besides maintaining fit by playing, I do love the socialization aspect of it. The fact that I get to talk and play with people who put a smile on my face is one of the best feelings ever, and I will never take it for granted. The enjoyment I feel from playing sports with friends is the same motivation I want to discover by working out. I think the key thing that motivates me is better mental health. I want to not only look healthier, but I want to feel healthier. I know that as the changes start to come in, my mental health will improve tremendously. I will put less stress and pressure on myself to lose weight, and my sleep will improve too, because every time I work out, I fall asleep immediately at night and get more hours of good sleep. This is what regularly motivates me to workout, and I feel like it is a similar motivational factor as most of my friends.
4) List the specific barriers or excuses which prevents you from participating in and sticking to your exercise program and possible solutions to overcome each barrier?
The one issue that has always stopped me is time. I feel like I don't have enough time to work out consistently, whether it was when I was in high school or now in college. When I get home I procrastinate to do my homework, and on weekends when I come home from my part-time job, I am exhausted and don't feel like working out. Time always feels limited in my mind, and the older I get, the more impossible the task of working out consistently feels. Time and motivation are huge factors of why I haven't got anywhere near my workout goals. Even when I do have the time to workout, my mind makes excuses that prevent me from going. I feel like once I pass these mental obstacles, I will be one step closer to achieving my goals.
